Understanding Internet Marketing

Internet marketing is a fairly straightforward concept of monetizing the web. Understanding Internet marketing and all of its various components, however, isn't always so simple.

The multiple intricacies and unknown variables involved with successful marketing to both humans viewers and search engines quickly muddles the simplicity of monetization theories.

Often times, scammers and hucksters use this confusion to sell a number of valueless products and services to individuals hoping to start their own online businesses.

In many instances, the information, product, or services sold are paid for with one-time payments and prove to be either outdated or simply ineffective. In worse cases, the products are actually counterproductive to making money online and require recurring payments.

Of course, not all products and services directed towards the Internet marketing and work-at-home crowds are Internet marketing scams. There are certain products, such as some keyword tools and web hosting programs, which are helpful and legitimate.

To aid in making this section on understanding Internet marketing and Internet marketing scams more organized and easier to follow, I will break down the topic into its four fundamental principles.

The first two principles relate to what is being marketed, and the second two relate to how something is marketed.

It is important to note that Internet marketing is a constantly evolving field, and the areas discussed below do not represent the entirety of the field. They do, however, represent the key elements of online marketing approaches.

What Is Marketed

Affiliate Marketing
This is a popular method of Internet marketing for most beginners. In this approach, a person will attempt to promote the goods or services of another individual or a company. The individual doing the promoting of the other's product is known as an affiliate (or sometimes as an associate) and earns money through commissions.

Marketing Own Goods/Services
Comparatively, this approach is less popular, as fewer work-at-home marketers are likely to have their own product or service. Though, for those who do, Internet marketing provides a means of promoting your own goods.

How Something Is Marketed

Low-Cost/Free Tactics
The use of free online marketing tactics is a rapidly growing specialty. The idea here is simple: find ways to promote either your affiliate or personal business online without spending money. Common practices include: article marketing, forum marketing, and email marketing.

Paid Marketing Tactics
The typified version of this tactic is the use of advertisements. On larger scales, this approach can be very pricey, but it is possible to maintain a more moderate advertising budget. Depending upon where the advertisement is displayed, the method and amount of payment will vary.
